The NFT type seems too difficult to filter the the water well. The only type that is easiest for me is the grow bed media type. With the grow bed type, I tried with gravel. However, when I want to start with the seed, I had to grow the seed somewhere else before I could transplant it to the grow bed. so, I tried many other media such as timber dust, sand, even soil. The only media I am successful with is lava rock and lava sand. I found this material the best media for the grow bed. With this media, I could directly plant the seed on it and in 1 or 2 days, they start to grow. It seems lava rock is very good for the plant because whenever you over water it, it doesnât get too socking wet. If it gets dry in hot sunny day, it doesnât get too dry and can still hold some water. But still, I am not satisfied with the output of this system. Acoording to one book published in Indonesia, the payback period aquaponic system with grow bed media is about 2 years. So, I said why not integrating it with chicken that produce eggs. Chickens produce egg everyday. So, we can make money everyday from the eggs. I finally built this Aquaponics 4 in 1 system that integrates not only fish and vegetable, but chickens that produce eggs as well. You might ask how the system works? How am I dealing with the chicken poop? Do I feed chicken as well fish? Before answering you all those questions, I need to inform you that in many areas in Asia, people are used to keeping chickens on top of their fish pond. But for a compact integrated aquaponic system with limited space for the pond, the chicken poop cannot go directly to the fish pond. So, No. the chicken poop do not go directly to fish pond. Instead, the chicken poop will have to be treated not thrown away to produce maggot flies larva. So, The fish is fed with the maggot produced from the chicken poop. I think this system is wonderful. You just feed the chicken, and you produce 4 commodities egg, chicken meet, fish, and vegetable. You still have the remains of chicken poop you can use to fertilize the soil. This system should be the answer for the ever decreasing space for farmland, and to make farming more profitable and producing more food for the same amount of land.
